BT Young Scientist Competition 2025
A Celebration of STEM Excellence at Presentation Secondary School
At Presentation Secondary School, we are deeply committed to inspiring innovation, fostering creativity, and empowering our students to shape the future through STEM. This year, that dedication was recognised on the national stage when our students, sisters Ciara, Laoise, and Saoirse, were crowned the Overall Winners of the BT Young Scientist & Technology Exhibition 2025.
Their award-winning project, “ACT (Aid Care Treat): App-timising Emergency Response,” is a perfect example of how we encourage our students to use science, technology, engineering, and mathematics to solve real-world challenges. Through rigorous research, innovative thinking, and collaborative problem-solving, the girls developed a project that impressed judges with its creativity, depth, and potential to make a genuine impact on society.
This extraordinary achievement demonstrates what’s possible when students are supported, challenged, and inspired in their STEM journey. It also reflects the dedication of our teaching staff, in particular Ms. Helena Madigan, whose expert guidance and mentorship were instrumental in helping the girls turn their vision into reality.
We are especially proud that this marks our second overall BT Young Scientist title, following Emer Jones’s victory in 2008 with her pioneering project, “Research and Development of Emergency Sandbag Shelters.” This continued success highlights our school’s long-standing tradition of STEM excellence and our commitment to nurturing the next generation of innovators, leaders, and problem-solvers.
At Presentation Secondary School, we believe that STEM education transforms possibilities into progress. Ciara, Laoise, and Saoirse’s success is not just a proud moment for our school — it’s a powerful reminder to every student that with curiosity, perseverance, and the right support, the future has no limits.
BT Young Scientist Competition 2024
Presentation Tralee has once again demonstrated its commitment to excellence in science and technology. This year, the school's talented students have achieved remarkable success in the prestigious 2024 BT Young Scientist Competition. The competition, which has been an important element of STEM education in Ireland since 1963, encourages young minds to explore and innovate in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Students from across the country participate, presenting projects that are judged in categories such as biology, physics, social and behavioural sciences, and technology.
The successful project titled "ACT {Aid, Care, Treat} – an immediate, accessible, technological aid to assist in emergencies, supported by a comprehensive repository of medical information." This project, developed by Ciara and Saoirse Murphy, was praised for its innovative approach to health and wellbeing, earning the Runner Up Group award in the competition.
MICROSOFT DREAM SPACE AMBASSADOR PROGRAMME
Presentation Tralee is a proud participant in the Microsoft Dream Space Programme which stands as a beacon of our innovative spirit. This ground-breaking initiative not only arms our learners with advanced STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) capabilities but also provided an opportunity to begin a unique intergenerational dialogue within our educational community.
Our most recent student ambassadors have excelled in simplifying complex concepts and have extended their expertise to teach coding skills to junior students, further bridging the knowledge gap. The "Older Wiser Learner" event, integral to the 2023-2024 programme, celebrated shared learning and enhanced the digital literacy of the older members of our community, particularly in cyber safety. This initiative has profoundly impacted all involved, reinforcing our dedication to lifelong learning and community development.
