The Mayor of Tralee, Cllr. Terry O Brien invited the Transition Year students of Presentation Secondary School to participate in an exciting project this month.  The students were thrilled to be invited to design and decorate a Christmas themed vacant shop front in Tralee Town Centre. It was a wonderful opportunity to contribute to the enhancement of the aesthetics and character of vacant buildings in Tralee.

The 4B TY class, with the help of their Art teacher Mr. Alan O’Sullivan put a lot of thought into the design.  They wanted to incorporate many ideas that are important to Tralee and the class themselves.

The theme behind the window design is The Rose of Tralee Festival, Neat Streets and the differences in our lives because of Covid-19.

This year we missed the Rose of Tralee Festival.  The festival is such an important part of Tralee bringing fun, entertainment and tourists into our town.  We wanted to have our own Christmas version. The Rose of Tralee with a twist, Santa is filling in for Daithi O’Sé and we have a reindeer wearing a sash as one of the Roses. On the other side of the window, we have Mrs. Clause sitting at home watching the Roses on TV, she has the fire on and a warm cup of hot chocolate in her hands.

The school has been involved in an Taisces Neat Streets since 2019. It is an anti-litter and waste programme and works well with the Christmas Window Project by enhancing our town environment.  The girls incorporated the important message to keep our town clean by painting the Grinch wearing a Neat streets t-shirt collecting rubbish, because even he knows it’s the right thing to do! We also painted a naughty and nice list but of course Covid is the only one on the naughty side. We have signposts saying shop local to promote shopping in local shops because of the tough times for business owners and stay safe so we can all enjoy a happy and healthy Christmas.

Earlier this week the students were presented with a prize by the Mayor, Cllr. Terry O Brien for their participation on completion of their project.  The window on Castle Street can be viewed from now until the New Year.

Merry Christmas Everyone
