Following some really difficult questions one of our teams was in a three way tie break for third place. Unfortunately it did not go their way but both teams did amazingly well and were just points behind the winning teams.

Well done to all involved on a Friday night and their mentor Ms Margaret O’Connell!

IWISH 2018

TY students at Pres Tralee attended the IWISH conference in City Hall Cork on Friday 26th of January.

IWISH (Inspiring Women in Stem) is an initiative to inspire, encourage and motivate young female students to pursue careers in STEM. I WISH featured a conference and interactive exhibitions with workshops, daily keynotes and engaging talks by women and men who have seen the opportunities for a great career in STEM. This event is an amazing opportunity for our science students to see the many and diverse career opportunities available to them through perusing a career in science and the importance of taking STEM subjects at Senior level. Thanks to Science teachers Ms. O’Keeffe, Ms. O Donoghue and Ms. C. O’Mahony for accompanying you on the day.

Language week at Pres Tralee made a welcome return between January 22nd and 26th with a full range of activities being provided for all year groups in the school in both German and French.

The week got off to a great start on Monday with a French play being performed for 4th and 5th year students before lunch and for 2nd year students after lunch. Performed by Native-speaking French actors from the Toulouse region,  F.T.F.S.  – French Theatre for Schools -  have been coming to Pres Tralee for a number of years .The performances  included  lots of interactive audience participation and incorporated core curriculum material.

TY students hosted language cafés on Tuesday for 2nd and 6th years. This event has really captured the imagination of all students the last few years as waitresses take orders from customers who have to select the delicious treats on the menus of the French and German cafés – the aroma of café au lait and baked goods wafted tantalisingly into the assembly area!

1st years participated in French and German Bingo on Wednesday – hosted by The TYs.

Running in the background of all these activities was a range of displays of posters featuring vocabulary, information about French and German culture etc. and all 1st year posters are on display in the 1st year area. Many thanks to all the members of the Language departments who had been busy preparing the comprehensive range of events for the coming week!  The emphasis on languages will undoubtedly change for our students as we face an era of uncertainty with “Brexit” on the horizon, so all activities which encourage our students to master the spoken languages will be of huge benefit to our students in the future.

Pres Tralee took to the Gym on Thursday 25th of January to congratulate the school U16 All-Ireland Champions in style! It was with great pride that  Mrs. Kelly acknowledged the great win by the girls, commending each member of the team in turn as they displayed both the Cup and the prize won by Mary O'Connell as the Most Valuable Player. Team Captain Rachel Kilgallen addressed the school and on behalf of the team acknowledged the great support the team received from their Mentor Dell White. The team won't have much time to enjoy this win as they continue preparations for their League Semi-final in the next couple of weeks. Well done to all and good luck in your next match!
