P.E. DEPARTMENT AIM
Our motto is: Work eXercise into your lifestyle
We work on a 3 -pronged integrated approach to include the:
Extension of the Curriculum
Enhancement of both
The Curriculum is the core of PE:
} In years 1-3 we use the recommended JCPE (Dep. of Education Junior Cycle PE) giving breath, depth and coherence to the PE programme. Schools have to teach 7 out of the 8 strands:
1. Adventure activities. 2. Aquatics. 3. Athletics. 4. Dance. 5. Invasion games
6. Net and fielding games. 7. Gymnastics. 8. Health-related activity (3 to level 2).
} TY. A broad programme including personal development & social responsibility.
} Senior Cycle.
The Co-Curricular or extension to the programme:
This is a planned integration and extension of the PE programme to a captive audience.
It has the inherent advantage of being built into the school curriculum and time table, therefore all students participate.
It is a part of the Rich task or student challenge at the end of a block of learning for each school year.
Extra Curricular to include the lunch and after school activities.
The Co-Curricular Rich Task programme will run as follows:
In addition to the double class PE programme 1st yrs will have a Sports Morning on Cheerleading and Basketball last week of first term
as their primary Rich Task in year 1.
In addition to the double class PE programme 2nd years will have a 1 day Outdoor Education Trip to Cappanalea in September, an Orienteering event in Ballyseedy in February. Their Spikeball Sports morning will be their primary Rich Task in year 2.
In addition to the double class PE programme 3rd years will have a Sports Morning as their Block 1 Rich Task.

OCTOBER 2013 - NATIONAL AWARD FOR HEAD OF P.E. DEPARTMENT
The Michael Darmody Award was presented to Ms. Anne Moran, Head of P.E. Dept. at Presentation Secondary School Tralee, in recognition of an outstanding contribution to Physical Education in Ireland at the National Conference of the Physical Education Association in Waterford in October 2013.
[Michael Darmody worked as a Physical Education Inspector with Dept. of Education for many years. His tenure of office was marked by great strides in the development of curricula and of the physical and human infra-structure of physical education in Ireland…He imagined a new future for physical education in Ireland and worked strategically and tirelessly towards it’s attainment.]
The citation regarding Ann for the award included reference to 3 main areas.
Firstly, the development within the school of a peer-mentoring system in P.E. for a student with Downs syndrome which led to the development of a 6-week intervention of adapted sports activities for young people with disabilities. The pupils come to Presentation, are paired with TY students and experience a range of activities such as curling, botchella, enlarged skittles and spike volleyball ending in a task tournament. The scheme has been extremely enriching for all concerned, especially the Transition year students..
Secondly , her acknowledged role in mentoring students and pre-service teachers. Ann has lectured in her own personal philosophy on how to conduct research, moving from reflection to critical reflection and from undocumented action research to documented research. Anne is much sought after as a Mentor for third-level P.E. students who are very fortunate to benefit from her enthusiasm and experience as well as the excellent P.E. system she organises in Pres Tralee.
Thirdly her reform of the Annual school sports day. The annual sports day was revamped a number of years ago and is no longer a full day for the entire school. Instead a structured activity morning per year group through the year is held with tournaments such as basketball, volleyball ,cheer-leading etc at the end of the students Activity block in that sport during the previous term and then a whole school afternoon in May with the traditional athletics as well as fun events for all – regardless of their athletic ability!
During her time at Pres Tralee,
Anne has overseen the development of P.E. within the school from ad hoc single periods to the current situation where every student has a double PE class every week with a detailed and varied programme for every year group and a comprehensive Extra-curricular activity programme. This progress has seen the need for the employment of more P.E. staff and Anne has been joined in recent years by Mr.Gabriel Brennan and Ms. Patrycja Czarnoleska as well as part-time coaches for Basketball , badminton etc. An Active schools week is held each year where staff and students alike partake in such activities as a “Walk in the Park” before school, aerobics at lunchtime etc. with a Sports Committee made up of 5th year students playing an integral role in organising this and other events such as the Annual Sports day. The school now has a “Slí na Sláinte for everyone to use at lunch-time etc. and there is no longer an excuse for anyone who “forgets gear” to opt out - they can still partake in exercise!
